2018 Classic Wrap-Up and Results
Although Bowen certainly lived up to its nickname of Blowin Bowen this weekend it didn’t stop the event or its loyal patrons coming out to enjoy the huge range of activities, food and fun, not to mention the atmosphere of a great party. The anglers who weighed in over the weekend have to be congratulated for their catches as to get out on water would have been quite an effort. All but 1 category, had fish weighed in and the prizes have gone home to some happy winners. Many decent sizes fish where still weighed in and donated to Meals On Wheels and Bowen Soup Kitchen. With the biggest fish for the comp weighed in being a Spanish mackerel at 23.3kg. The ladies once again shone out with their fishing this year and weighed in good catches. Water balloon challenge, hand ball, and pie eating contests where also part of the Saturday afternoon fun for the kids with prizes from many local businesses.
Crowds turned out in droves on Saturday night to see Heath Milner a Country Artist from Mackay Queensland Australia. Heath performs on regular bases in his home town but he also may be known for his appearance on the voice 2017, He performed along with INNOCENT EVE: singers, songwriters and sisters! With poetic lyrics, powerful vocals and perfect harmonies this duo is turning heads across Australia and abroad. The Chilli Peppers band aka "The California Kings” with their pinpoint accurate replication of all the Chilli Peppers greatest hits had everyone dancing with their renditions of the songs we all know and love as the night rolled on.
The late night revellers where treated to the ever popular songs of Acca Dacca and got the crowd rocking at the Sound shell with tribute band Whole Lotta AD/DC “playing and celebrating” the greatest hits of this classic hard rock band. A superbly accurate show, complete with costumes, quality sound, lighting and unrelenting energy.
Sunday found the sun out and the wind a little tamer and all the families and friends who come down enjoyed a relaxing day with kids craft, sand castles, lure casting and a lolly drop from a helicopter, all of which had prizes to take home too. So it’s not just for the fishermen, it’s about time out from the rigors of our busy lives to enjoy the company of friends and family, listen to some music by the sea and maybe throw in a line. But you didn’t have to wet a line to win the fantastic boating packages or the lucky nomination prize.
The Senior Lucky Entrant winner of the $30200 boating package was Yvonne Jensen of Bowen - long term supporter of the classic who has been buying tickets for 22 years and the Junior Lucky entrant of the $7400 package was Paige Colls of Ayr whose family have been supporting the classic for 15 years. Both winners are still in shock with their wins and no doubt will be taking to the water real soon.
The Classic crew would like to sincerely thank ALL sponsors from the 23 major sponsors to the smaller business who are struggling in Bowen but STILL support this event. It takes a very small dedicated band of volunteers to bring the event to the shores of Bowen every year and the efforts of these dedicated few cannot go unrewarded, so please let anyone you know who gives up their time and their families and say thanks for a great weekend!
