2017 Classic Wrap-Up and Results
Happy crowds turned out over the weekend and although the wind kept anglers closer to shore, the number and variety of fish weighed in exceeded all expectations with many anglers donating their catch for filleting by Hines family who donate their time to get the fillets to meals on wheels. For the 26th year all the fish have been weighed in and the prizes all awarded for the Bowen Family Fishing Classic, with some very ecstatic kids taking home a variety of prizes from cash, rods, vouchers, fishing gear and more. The heaviest fish weighed in by a Senior being a Spanish mackerel at 24kg and for the Juniors 15 years and under also a Spanish mackerel weighing 15kg. Heaviest fish by a female was won by Sharon Anderson with a 24kg Spanish mackerel. For the first time in many years both prize boats stayed in Bowen. With Duane Power being the lucky entrant for the senior boating package valued at $30000 and Hudson Nisbet the lucky Junior boat worth $7300 winner.
We hope the locals and visitors to Bowen have had a great weekend and come again to see all we have to offer, including the great musical talents from Central and North Qld that took to the stage over the weekend, catering for all musical tastes from reggae, country, pop, rock n roll and some fresh new young artists, everyone had a great time on Bowen’s foreshore Festival Park. After a rocky start to 2017 with Cyclone Debbie crossing the coast of the Whitsunday region and work shortages, a well earned break was definitely needed and fun weekend was had for all who ventured out. Families and visitors come out in thousands to enjoy all the event has to offer from major prize boat packages, trifecta fishing challenge, over 60 weigh in prizes, accommodation vouchers, trade displays, giveaways galore, amusement rides, and big variety of food stalls to stop rumbling tummies, not to mention a bar catering for all tastes.
Even the younger family members where catered for with crafts, sandcastles and lolly drop, for the preteens - handball, and for all ages - yabby pumping, sausage roll scoffing, and lure casting, all with prizes to take home for the school holidays.
The Classic Crew would like to thank all businesses, sponsors and volunteers and their families who helped make the event a success yet again. Without you all regional events just don’t happen. We hope everyone involved in the 2017 Bowen Family Fishing Classic enjoyed all it had to offer and go home to tell friends and families, and “tell the world” what a beautiful part of the world we live in . We may have worries but at least no wars! Family, Food, Fishing, and Fun all in the greatest part of the Sunshine State.
